Virgo participates in European Researchers Night

European Researchers Night is coming! Thousands of activities and events will be organized on Friday September 27th in cities all over Europe to share science with the public, and offer opportunities for researchers to meet the population and create connections. Here are the public ERN activities that will see participation from researchers of the Virgo Collaboration.

  • Budapest: Virgo researchers of HUN-REN WIGNER Physics Research Center will organize a talk providing a brief insight into the fascinating world of gravitational waves and their sources, which open a new window into the study of the universe that has so far remained hidden from conventional electromagnetic observations.

  • Paris: scientists from the AstroParticle and Cosmology (APC) laboratory at UPCité and CNRS will guide you on a fun, interactive journey to the heart of astroparticles: what is a gravitational wave? What is a black hole? What is the history of the life of stars? How is the Michelson interferometer measured? How do you detect a variation in distance of one billionth of a billionth of a metre?
Booking is mandatory, more info here: https://u-paris.fr/la-nuit-europeenne-des-chercheurs-2024-a-luniversite-paris-cite/

  • Genova: In the context of Sharper Night, INFN Genova researcher Francesca Badaracco will tell you all about the history of gravitational wave detection

  • Bergamo: Participants of the event “Donne in ascolto del cosmo”, part of the Festival Bergamoscienza, will hear Pia Astone (Dirigente di Ricerca INFN and La Sapienza University professor) and Silvia Piranomonte (INAF – OAR researcher), tell us about the significance of the multimessenger astronomy revolution, with sonifications of real data by musician Massimo Magrini.

  • Perugia: In the context of Sharper Night, Virgo researchers of INFN Perugia Mateusz Bawaj and Piero Chessa have organized an exhibition about gravitational wave detection, including a 3D model of Virgo and virtual tour to the experiment

  • Roma: Virgo researchers at the INFN Rome section and La Sapienza University will take part in ERN activities organized by the Scienza Insieme Consortium. They will offer audio, visual and tactile activities so everyone can have fun and learn about the science of gravitational waves!

  • Pisa/Cascina:  EGO will organize ERN activities within the framework of Bright Night (ERN in Tuscany) and PICO (Physics for all). During the morning, primary and secondary school students will have the opportunity to visit the Virgo interferometer, guided by researchers. In the afternoon, starting at 4.30 p.m., we’ll meet in Piazza Santa Caterina in Pisa with the van ‘Big Bang Machine’: a mobile immersive installation, curated by EGO with the support of Fondazione Pisa, IVECO and the European Union project AHEAD 2020, which will take visitors on a virtual journey through space and time to the origin of our Universe. At 7 PM in the same square we’ll talk about AI and the astronomy of the future with Massimiliano Razzano, virgo researcher and University of Pisa professor
