Citizen’s Science

Citizen’s science is the participation of non-experts in scientific research, under the direction of professional scientists. This is becoming a more and more important aspect of modern science, and the Virgo Collaboration strives to center it in its outreach efforts. To do so Virgo participates in the EU project REINFORCE (REsearch INfrastructures FOR Citizens in Europe). It is a Research & Innovation Action, supported by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 SWAFS “Science with and for Society” work programme. Through REINFORCE more than 100,000 citizens are engaged in the research done in Large Research Infrastructures, through a participatory design methodology that takes into account the special characteristics of different target groups, their barriers and constraints, their perceptions and biases and their attitudes and knowledge regarding science.
